After a few big weeks for hurricanes and tropical storms on both coasts, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) noted a significant amount of activity in the Atlantic Ocean on Monday.
“Labor Day is busy across the Atlantic with 2 weak or dissipated tropical cyclones, and 3 candidates for development,” the NHC said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. “We are closely monitoring Invest #AL95 over the central Atlantic, which is expected to become a TD or TS in a day or two, and strengthen more later this week.”
In the NHC’s Tropical Weather Outlook on Monday, the agency highlighted “an area of low pressure” that “has formed from the tropical wave centered about 700 miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands.”
“The low-level circulation has become better defined since yesterday, with increasing organization in the shower and thunderstorm activity,” the NHC said. “Environmental conditions are forecast to be conducive for further development, and this system is expected to become a tropical depression or a tropical storm in a day or two.”
The agency also called attention in the outlook to a “strong tropical wave over western Africa” that is “forecast to move off the African coast in a couple of days.” The NHC said circumstances could lead to a tropical depression forming “over the far eastern tropical Atlantic around the latter part of the week or the weekend.”
The brewing in the Atlantic follows hurricanes Hilary and Idalia, which both hit different parts of the U.S. in the last month. Hilary resulted in the first tropical storm watch in California history.
